The Girl on Fire
Once upon a time there
was a girl on fire. At first she did not know she was on fire and then
when she did, she tried to put out the little flames herself. But she
could not, and the flames got big and the girl on fire screamed. She
screamed and she screamed but no one could hear her; no matter how loud
she screamed or who was near. So the girl swallowed the flames.
The flames inside her
changed the girl on fire. Slowly she burned from inside. The world lost
its colour to her. Grass was not as green; sunshine not as bright; the
wind was no longer cold and the sun no longer hot when compared to the
terrible, terrible flames.
Slowly, the girl on fire
burned and her faint cries went unheard until finally the girl on fire
died. Her death was a death on the inside, where the flames had burnt
her, and no one noticed the change. So she walked the earth a living
cinder.
